ABSTRACT

Drainage of the abdominal cavity is sometimes necessary after abdominal surgery, and several materials are used as drains [10]. Whether drains are even necessary after surgery is often controversial [2, 3, 8]. One problem in the use of drains is that biomaterials in the peritoneal cavity disrupt the physiology of the host and may cause bacterial translocation [1, 6].
