ABSTRACT

This chapter will address the questions surrounding the raison d’être of the mitochondrial genome. We will describe how mitochondrial diseases can potentially be managed by strategies currently under development which replace defective mitochondrial genes with a nuclear copy (allotopic expression). These studies have contributed towards a better understanding of the evolution of the mitochondrial genome and the mechanisms of mitochondrial protein import. More... »
