ABSTRACT

The genus Dactylis belongs to the family Poaceae. The best-known and most economically important species is Dactylis glomerata L., commonly referred to as orchardgrass in the United States and cocksfoot in Europe, especially in the British Isles. It is a cool-season forage grass grown for both pasture and hay. Although it is native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia, it has existed in North America since the 1750s (Christie and McElroy 1995). More... »
