ABSTRACT

Since the discovery of Nod factors (NFs) six years ago (Lerouge et al 1990), many studies have concentrated on the role of the various rhizobial nod genes in the control of NF synthesis, the diversity of NF structures, and the various types of responses that NFs elicit in plants. As recent reviews have been published in this field (Schultze et al., 1994; Spaink, 1995; Fellay et al., 1995; van Rhijn and Vanderleyden, 1995; Dénarié et al., 1996), we will simply discuss in this brief chapter a few topics which are of particular interest to us either because they have led to a better understanding of the molecular basis of host specificity or because they open important perspectives.
