ABSTRACT

The need for the conservation of germplasm of crops has been repeatedly emphasized. In maize, especially the susceptibility to Helminthosporium maydis cost the US farmers hundreds of millions of dollars in lost production in 1970 (Plucknett et al. 1983). This attracted international attention, and now germplasm banks are being strengthened in many countries (Table 1). The CIMMYT germplasm bank perhaps has the largest collection. It contains a wealth of genetic diversity from over 50 countries (CIMMYT 1986; Taba 1990); the term of storage ranges from short to medium. More... »
