AUTHORS ABSTRACTFor wide Hybridization in various crops (see Bajaj 1990), in addition to the sexual Hybridization through embryo culture and somatic Hybridization through protoplast fusion, the intraovarian pollination and in vitro fertilization techniques can be made use of in producing crosses in which the incompatibility is due to the presence of an extra-long style and a short pollen tube. The technique of test-tube pollination/fertilization involves in growing the unpollinated ovules/spikelets on synthetic media and then sprinkling pollen over them directly, or on the cut end of the style/silk. This technique has been used for the production of seed in a number of plant species (Kanta et al. 1962; Rangaswamy 1977; Zenkteler 1990). This chapter, primarily based on the author’s published work (Bajaj 1979), deals with the in vitro fertilization in various Indian cultivars of maize. More... »
