ABSTRACT

Esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach. Most of esophageal neoplasms are malignant, and only 20 % of tumors are benign. Benign tumors include papilloma, adenoma, leiomyoma, and other rare tumors such as fibrovascular polyp, granular cell tumor, and mesenchymal tumor. Benign tumors are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally on endoscopy. Benign tumors do not have malignant potential, but they can occasionally cause complications such as dysphagia, bleeding, or obstruction, which require treatment. The most common malignant tumor is squamous cell carcinoma, but incidence of adenocarcinoma has been increasing which arises from Barrett’s esophagus. Gastrointestinal stromal tumor with high malignant potential, melanoma, lymphoma, and metastasis are rare malignant tumors in the esophagus. More... »
