ABSTRACT

The study of deterministic chaos in classical mechanics has by now grown into a popular area of research. However, its implications at the microscopic level, in the domain of quantum mechanics, only recently attracted much attention. This is a quite important problem; indeed, the analysis of quantum systems which are chaotic in the classical limit is leading to new qualitative features of quantum motion which are now the object of laboratory experiments and which cannot be predicted on the basis of a qualitative understanding modelled after integrable systems and perturbation theory.
