ABSTRACT

Die Entwicklung unserer Kenntnisse über die Gesetzmäßigkeiten der Sauerstoffaufnahme in der Lunge läßt deutlich drei Abschnitte erkennen, die durch ganz verschiedenartige Impulse eingeleitet wurden. Schon bald, nachdem die Aufgabe und die Bedeutung der Lunge für den Gesamtorganismus in den Grundzügen erfaßt worden war, stellte man die entscheidende Frage nach den wirksamen Kräften für den Austausch der Atemgase. Es ist nicht erstaunlich, daß zu einer Zeit, da die mathematischen Formulierungen der Diffusionsgesetze gelungen und andererseits die verschiedenartigen sekre-torischen Leistungen von tierischen Zellen bekanntgeworden waren, diese beiden Transportmöglichkeiten auch im Hinblick auf den Gasaustausch in der Lunge zur Diskussion gestellt wurden. Sowohl die Anhänger der „Dif-fusionstheorie“ als auch die Verfechter der „Sekretionstheorie“ konnten Gründe für die eine oder die andere Annahme geltend machen, ohne daß eine endgültige Entscheidung herbeigeführt wurde. Die ungeklärte theore-tische Grundfrage zwang aber zu weiteren methodischen Entwicklungen und neuartigen experimentellen Untersuchungen, die über das spezielle Problem hinaus ihre Bedeutung für das Studium der äußeren Atmung behalten haben.
