ABSTRACT

The MR images obtained from the coronal plane perpendicular to the hippocampus at 1.0/1.5 T in 18 patients with non-refractory temporal lobe epilepsy were closely examined to detect evidence of hippocampal sclerosis and other temporal lobe lesions. Hippocampal sclerosis was revealed by either brightness in the central region of the hippocampus or by smallness in 12 patients. Other temporal lobe lesions were found in 11 patients. Six patients had lesions in both the hippocampus and ipsilateral temporal lobe. These results are nearly identical to the findings of pathological examination in refractory epilepsy. Thus, MRI can be very useful even in non-refractory temporal lobe epilepsy. More... »
