ABSTRACT

Plesiomonas shigelloides is a Gram-negative bacterium which has been implicated as an agent of human gastroenteritis [1] and is recognized as being an important cause of seafood-associated outbreaks [2, 3].A study in Japan ranked P. shigelloides first (66.7%) in a group of enteropathogens causing travellers’ diarrhoea. Septicaemia, cellulitis, meningitis, cholecystitis and endophthalmitis due to P. shigelloides have also been documented among immunocompromised patients. The mortality rate of these patients associated with Plesiomonas septicemia is high. More... »
