ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic granulomatous infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). The gastrointestinal tract is the sixth most frequent form of extrapulmonary TB (after lymphatic, genitourinary, bone and joint, miliary, and meningeal tuberculosis). Intestinal TB (ITB) can develop via swallowing infected sputum, hematogenous spread, ingestion of contaminated milk or food, and/or contiguous spread from adjacent organs. The ileocecal region is the most common site of intestinal involvement, likely due to the relative stasis and abundant lymphoid tissue in this region. More... »
