AUTHORS ABSTRACTThe effects of nanotechnology, the application of nanoscience, which owes its early success to the IT industry, are already being felt across society. Because nanotechnology can now be applied so widely, it is called an enabling technology. There are few, if any, industries or products that could not benefit from the application of nanotechnology. It is not unreasonable to predict that nanotechnology will completely revolutionise industry and industrial processes within a decade. This chapter examines the economic and social potential of nanotechnology, and put figures on this potential, setting the scene for the remainder of the book which addresses how the most important issue of real time, non-destructive or invasive characterization at the nanoscale is being resolved.
