ABSTRACT

Introduction The goal of this study was to compare the optical properties (o.p.) of colorectal primary tumors with that of synchronous hepatic metastases to ascertain whether the o.p of the primary tumor can be used to determine suitable application parameters and dosimetry for metastases. Material/Methods The o.p. were determined using a monochromatic light source and a mono-Ulbricht-sphere system. The samples acquired from the surgical specimens of patients with colon carcinoma metastasized to the liver. The measurements were then evaluated using a self-developed software program (Monte Carlo simulation). Results The highest optical penetration depth was found at a wavelength of 1064 nm. Absorption and scattering coefficients in tumor tissue were always significantly lower than those in healthy tissue. This led to a higher optical penetration depth of the laser light in the tumor tissue (liver and colon; p Conclusion Laser coagulation itself leads to a change in the optical parameters, requiring an adaptation of the treatment parameters during LITT. There is no direct correlation between the optical parameters of colorectal primary tumors and those of synchronous liver metastases, which indicates a modifying effect of the metastasizing process on optical behavior.
