ABSTRACT

HMEs were first described in the mid 1950s and the early 1960s, and have undergone considerable development since the beginning of the 1970s [1]. The basic principle of all HMEs lies in their capacity to retain heat and moisture during expiration, and deliver these to the incoming dry medical gas during the subsequent inspiration.
