ABSTRACT

The design of coatings with nanocomposite structure, consisting of at least two phases (one or two that are nanocrystalline and one amorphous), is attracting an increasing interest due to the new possibilities of synthesis of applicable materials with superior physical, chemical and engineering properties [1]. In the field of the design of hard coatings and their application to protect cutting or drilling tools, the search for new systems with improved mechanical and tribological properties is highly demanded. The knowledge of the structure of the nanocomposites is considered of great importance not only for understanding the mechanical behaviour at the microscale, but also for the design of strategies to synthesize materials with controlled properties.
