ABSTRACT

In this chapter we first described the upcoming trends in manufacturing and ERP. The strict application of the classic three-layer architecture (illustrated in Chap. 1) is no longer feasible in modern IT environments. There is a clear demand for more flexible, service-oriented architectures that allow, for example, an ERP system to directly interact with an RFID reader on the shop floor. Therefore, in this chapter we described how a modern architecture and core technologies for real-world awareness can be designed to meet this new demand. We used SAP software as an example for our illustration of a modern architecture. More... »
