ABSTRACT

Venous diseases of the lower extremities are of paramount medical importance due to their frequency and their potential long-term complications such as venous ulcers and post-thrombotic syndrome. This is mirrored by the prevalence of varicose veins in the Western world of 30% in women and about 15% in men. The vast majority of this population suffers from the stem-type insufficiency with an incompetent channel consisting of either the long or short saphenous vein. Subsequently the tributary veins dilate and form the typical varicosities. More... »
