ABSTRACT

We have recently reported [1] a homogeneous linewidth version of the nonlinear Hanle effect. The two—photon interaction creates a coherence between Zeeman sublevels, when polarized laser radiation excites components of an optical transition with ΔM=±l selection rules. When the degeneracy between the M sublevels is removed by an external field B, the coherence is cancelled, causing a decrease in the saturation,and it is possible to record an increase in the absorption. The shape of the effect is directly determined by the level in which the degeneracy is removed, and is insensitive to the laser bandwidth effects (the saturating optical radiation only acts as a coherence coupler between the sublevels).
