ABSTRACT

In previous study, we showed that energy expenditure could be estimated using so-called cumulative acceleration technique so far as walking and jogging on a flat load. However, it was pointed out that this estimation is wrong during walking including up/down hill and up/down stairs. In this study we have tried to develop a new algorithm to estimate the energy consumption during walking up/sown hill. We used a portable acceleration-monitoring device developed before with one trixial acceleration sensor inside. Three healthy men and one woman aged from 22 to 24 years participated in experiments. They walked for three minutes on a treadmill which inclination was adjusted in five different angles. At the data analysis the relative displacement of the trajectory of the center of gravity of body in saggital plane was calculated to estimate the load slope angle. This relative trajectory can be drawn from the acceleration change and its shape changes according to the slope angle. Consequently, slope angle can be known from the phase difference between the vertical and anterior-posterior relative displacement. In the new estimation of energy consumption during walking up/down hill previous estimation algorithm for level walking is modified by this estimated slope angle.
