ABSTRACTThe present chapter will review the current state of the art in the field of bacterial strain typing through the use of tandem repeat polymorphism. We will first go through a brief overview of multiple locus VNTR analysis (MLVA) typing and then describe how to set-up or enrich a MLVA assay. We will also review representative examples of the currently proposed MLVA assays and discuss the methods used for MLVA data analysis. Finally, we will compare MLVA to other approaches, and discuss issues related to standardisation and possibilities offered by the internet in terms of shared databases for MLVA (MLVA web services).
