ABSTRACTZiel dieses Herausgeberbandes war es, die mediale Wissenschaftskommunikation über Molekulare Medizin zu untersuchen und darzustellen. Ausgehend von öffentlichkeitstheoretischen Grundlagen der Wissenschaftskommunikation wurde analysiert, wie Journalisten ihr Selbstverständnis definieren und in welche größeren gesellschaftspolitischen und journalistischen Kontexte sie das Thema Molekulare Medizin stellen. Gefragt wurde, welche Akteure in der Presse- und Fernsehberichterstattung auftreten und welche Themen, Konflikte und Kontroversen um die ethischen, rechtlichen und sozialen Folgen der Molekularen Medizin präsentiert werden. Ausgehend von einer zunehmend sozialwissenschaftlich kontextualisierten empirischen Forschung, aber auch aufgrund theoretischer Arbeiten zur Wissenschaftssoziologie begann man in den 1980er Jahren grundlegender über das Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit nachzudenken und unterschiedliche Modelle mit der Frage zu entwickeln, mit welcher Systemrationalität Journalisten über Wissenschaft berichten (vgl. Kap. 9.1). Diese Diskussion ist bis heute nicht abgeschlossen, sondern hat dazu geführt, die verschiedenen Positionen detaillierter und zunehmend auch empirisch für unterschiedliche Medien zu erforschen. Die Aufsätze des vorliegenden Bandes tragen zu dieser Forschung bei. Daher werden im Folgenden kurz zwei prominente Modelle wissenschaftlicher Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt, um anschließend die Ergebnisse der in diesem Band präsentierten Studien in die Modelle einzuordnen.
