AUTHORS ABSTRACTMolekulare Medizin gilt wegen ihrer vielversprechenden Ansätze zur Diagnose, Prävention und Therapie von menschlichen Erkrankungen als ein Forschungsgebiet, das die tägliche medizinische Praxis in Deutschland revolutioniert. Auch in ökonomischer Sicht wird ihr eine zentrale Bedeutung für die Entwicklung des Landes zugeschrieben. Zugleich lösen die wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse politische und ethische Debatten aus, die in Forderungen nach strengeren Gesetzen resultieren (vgl. Kettner 2004). Da nur wenige Personen über direkte Erfahrungen mit Molekularer Medizin verfügen, nimmt die Öffentlichkeit an der Debatte vor allem über die massenmediale Berichterstattung teil. Die Häufigkeit der Berichterstattung und ihre spezifische Perspektive haben einen Einfluss darauf, wie Molekulare Medizin wahrgenommen und bewertet wird. Dies trifft insbesondere auf das Fernsehen zu: Es hat im Vergleich zu Hörfunk, Presse und Internet die höchste Tagesreichweite und wird am häufigsten gewählt, um sich zu informieren (vgl. Ridder/Engel 2005: 426). Um wissenschaftliche Themen im Fernsehen ausführlich zu behandeln und einem interessierten Laienpublikum zu vermitteln, eignet sich insbesondere das Format des Wissenschaftsmagazins (vgl. Hanel 1994: 12; Milde/Ruhrmann 2006: 432). Seine vergleichsweise geringen Produktionskosten ermöglichen es, flexibel auf aktuelle Entwicklungen und Themen zu reagieren. Nicht zuletzt deswegen ist seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre ein regelrechter Boom an Wissenschaftsmagazinen im deutschen Fernsehen zu verzeichnen (vgl. von Bullion 2004: 92; Meier/Feldmeier 2005: 205f; Milde/ Ruhrmann 2006: 432f).
