ABSTRACTMolekulare Medizin ist ein interdisziplinär orientiertes Forschungsfeld, das die Humanmedizin um molekularbiologische, gentechnische und biochemische Methoden ergänzt. Damit gilt Molekulare Medizin als großer Hoffnungsträger, da mit ihrer Hilfe unheilbare Krankheiten oder Gendefekte diagnostiziert und therapiert werden können. Gleichzeitig birgt sie aber auch gesellschaftliches Konfliktpotenzial. Sie weckt nicht nur Hoffnungen, sondern schürt Ängste vor allem hinsichtlich medizinischer und wissenschaftlicher Grenzüberschreitungen. Besonders strittig sind Themen, die sich mit der Reproduktion des Menschen, mit der Stammzellforschung oder dem Klonen befassen. Es geht dabei vor allem um die Frage, wieweit sich der Mensch in die Entscheidung über Leben und Tod einmischen darf. Daher wird der medizinische und wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisfortschritt der Molekularen Medizin von einem öffentlichen Diskurs begleitet, der sich insbesondere mit ethischen, rechtlichen und sozialen Fragen befasst.
