ABSTRACT

Rosin, studying the regions of Marwāṛ and Shekhāwāti in princely Rājpuṭāna, recover a complex system of folk knowledge, computation, and collaboration in pre-Independence arid-zone irrigated farming. For such share-cropping tenant farmers, Hira Singh’s Colonial Hegemony and Popular Resistance: Princes, Peasants, and Paramount Power provides a dialectic analysis of their petitions to their Maharajas during the turbulent years 1920 to 1940. For their descendants an array of hostels to support their formal schooling soon follows in the towns, further transforming princely subjects into activist citizens influencing the transition of the royal Jodhpur State into the subsequent democratic province of Rajasthan. These peasants prove active agents in their own liberation. More... »
