ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how South Asian American health has been left out of governmental health policies because of small population size and because the political moniker “Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander” (AANHOPI) tends to focus more on East Asian issues. Existing government-run healthcare programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program, and The Affordable Care Act, as well as the federal agencies that administer them, are described so they can become strong tools to optimize South Asian American health outcomes. A six-step National Health Action Plan to acknowledge, study, understand, and improve South Asian American health status is presented. More... »
