ABSTRACT

Algeria, even before its independence, had integrated sport and particularly football as a component of its diplomacy and international relations. One could argue that the creation of the National Liberation Front (FLN) Football Team, founded to represent the Algerian cause for independence, was a pivotal moment of the Algerian sport system. The integration of Algeria into the international sport system (including FIFA and the IOC) was important to consolidate its nation state formation around socialist and Third-Worldist ideologies. After more than 10 years of quasi-civil war in the 1990s, the consecutive qualification of Algeria to the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and 2014 offered an opportunity for the Algerian state to promote its stability in a region undergoing rapid and drastic transitions. On a national level, football was used, in the 1960s and 1970s, by the single-party state to promote values of national unity, thus impeding the development of claims regarding regional identities. As of the late 1980s, the football arena turned into a place for social and political protest. It further became a place of symbolic (and actual) confrontation between rival clubs, as well as a place of confrontation between football fans and the representative of the Algerian regime.
