ABSTRACT

This contribution aims to question the interaction between a commercial policy and the missionary strategy of the Roman Catholic Church for the implantation and control of rural cinemagoing practices in France before the Second World War. Baptized the ‘Pathé-Rural’, the 17.5 mm projector was the keystone of Pathé’s policy of format réduit. The reduced film format was thought to permit the opening of the rural market, helping cinema’s commercial diffusion in the countryside. In 1927–1928, one of the most active organizers of projections in rural France, the Catholic Church, was developing its projection network. In order to secure their cinematographic propaganda, Catholics evolved to become the main users of this reduced format. More... »
