ABSTRACT

A framework using Software Defined Networking (SDN) architecture to map the Virtual Network (VN) requests onto Edge Clouds interconnected by Metropolitan Optical Network (MON) is presented in this paper. As the proposed mathematical model relies on SDN for making an informed decision, the framework is termed as, Virtual Network Embedding on Metro Optical Network (VNE-MON). The proposed optimizer considers distinct characteristics of Optical Network and Multimedia applications to ensure Quality of Service (QoS) for the accepted VN requests. SDN enabled ensuring of proper coordination between different modules of the proposed framework. The proof of concept was demonstrated on a SDN and Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) testbed. The two control planes were evaluated on different QoS metrics after VN embedding phase. Numerical result reveals that the proposed SDN-based model outperformed the current state of the art control plane GMPLS for optical network. More... »
