ABSTRACTThe etymology of the word “taxonomy” is from the Greek taxis, meaning orderly arrangement, and nomos, meaning law. Stedman’s Medical Dictionary defines “taxonomy” as the systemic classification of living things or organisms; however, more recently, the term has come to mean any specialized method of classifying objects or events. In the scientific community, taxonomies provide efficient structural organization of vast and variable content. Ideally, taxonomic classification of surgical complications permits comparison of adverse outcomes between providers and institutions and assists in risk stratification. Well-designed, specialty-specific classification systems are less likely to be impractical; however, they may not be widely adopted if too cumbersome or not easily understood by nonsubspecialty providers. In this chapter, we explore the details behind taxonomic classification of complications in the surgical and urologic literature applicable to pelvic reconstruction procedures and highlight barriers to widespread adoption.
