ABSTRACT

Aortopulmonary window is a rare congenital malformation characterized by a defect between the ascending aorta and main pulmonary artery. The size and extension of these defects can be well displayed by two-dimensional echocardiography. Aortopulmonary window is frequently associated with significant additional cardiac malformations including VSD and interruption of the aortic arch. Therefore echocardiographic detection of aortopulmonary window requires a systematic approach of examination since this defect may remain undetected, if echocardiography focuses exclusively on associated cardiac malformation. Colour Doppler reveals LR-shunting related to the size of the defect and pulmonary vascular resistance. In patients with restrictive aortopulmonary window, pulsed wave and continuous wave Doppler can be used for noninvasive quantification of pulmonary artery pressure. More... »
