ABSTRACT

Atrioventricular septal defects include a spectrum of cardiac malformations characterized by absence of the atrioventricular septum, resulting in a common atrioventricular junction. The typical features of AVSDs including malformations of the common atrioventricular valve, primum ASDs, and inlet VSDs can be well displayed by 2-D echocardiography. Color Doppler echocardiography improves visualization of the associated septal defects and allows assessment of atrioventricular valve regurgitation. Velocity and direction of shunting across the septals defect can be quantified by pulsed wave and continuous wave Doppler. Interrogation of the maximal velocity of atrioventricular valve regurgitation and of the flow velocity of the VSD allows noninvasive estimation of systolic right ventricular and pulmonary arterial pressure based on the modified Bernoulli equation.
