ABSTRACTThe hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) is not a rare condition due to a lack of relaxation of the pyloric muscle caused by hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the antropyloric muscular ring. HPS is the most common surgical cause of vomiting in infants, and it is a very frequent cause of access in emergency hospital. The pathogenesis of HPS and the reasons for its prevalence in males have not yet been clarified.Imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis of HPS especially when the clinical exam is not sufficient. Radiologic imaging using both conventional radiology and ultrasonography is able to differentiate the various causes of vomiting in pediatric patients.Nowadays, according to the radioprotective criteria, ultrasound is preferable to the traditional radiology, giving an equally detailed examination, allowing the real-time assessment of movements of peristalsis and consenting to see the opening or the failure of the opening of the pyloric canal. In doubtful cases, an ultrasound monitoring can enable to get the right diagnosis. With conventional radiology, any postsurgical complications can be easily assessed. More... »
