ABSTRACT

As arthroscopic techniques and the tools available have advanced, the treatment of FAI and associated labral tears has been refined. While labral debridement was the standard of care in the early days of hip arthroscopy, increasingly treatment is now based on specific anatomic variations of the labral tear. The labrum augments the femoral head coverage within the acetabulum and provides a joint sealing effect that ensures adequate joint lubrication; this also contributes to improving cartilage nutrition and hip stability. The loss of this sealing effect can cause degeneration of the hip due to poor fluid mechanics and increased hip instability. There is increasing evidence supporting labral repair over labral debridement. Finally, the treatment of the labral tear is commonly dictated by the type of tear and the quality of labral tissue.
