ABSTRACT

Information on disability among children is collected infrequently in national surveys. Many international and supranational organisations are aware of this dearth of information and emphasise the requirement of such data for policy and planning purposes. There are many challenges in conducting such surveys: defining disability, operationalising the concept, getting children involved and analysing data from multiple sources. The interaction of conceptual, methodological and operational difficulties represents an additional barrier to the implementation of child disability surveys. Nevertheless some national surveys have been carried out but different approaches have been adopted. Identifying the prevalence of disability among children has both health and economic advantages; highlighting the burden that society puts on disabled children and the negative attitudes that they may face – primarily social exclusion and discrimination.
