ABSTRACT

Implant manufacturers offer a wide array of stem and augment options for reconstruction in revision total knee replacement (TKR). Revisions performed with stems have been shown to outperform revisions without stems and thus are widely accepted as standard; however if those stems should be fully cemented or cemented at the joint surface and then press fit into the diaphysis is controversial. Acceptable mid- and long-term clinical results have been published using both methods of implantation. Therefore, the technique and type of stemmed component insertion depend largely on surgeon preference; however, in some situations, bone quality and canal geometry may impact the decision on which method of fixation is selected. This chapter reviews the rationale behind the use of stems in revision knee replacement and describes the surgical techniques of stem implantation. More... »
