ABSTRACT

In this chapter the course of the normal abdominal arteries and veins on 2d images are shown. Characteristic color flow images and typical spectral Doppler profiles are displayed. The following arteries can be shown with color Doppler and measured by spectral Doppler: Aorta, coeliac trunk, superior mesenteric artery, common hepatic and splenic artery, renal artery, segmental, interlobar and interlobular renal arteries can be displayed by color Doppler and measured by spectral Doppler. The following veins can be displayed by color Doppler and measured by spectral Doppler: Inferior vena cava, portal vein, superior mesenteric vein, splenic vein, hepatic veins, renal, segmental, interlobar and interlobular renal veins. Normal values for the flow velocities and indices are helpful for the interpretation of pathologic flow. Pathologic indications are thrombosis or occlusion of the aorta and inferior vena cava. After thrombolysis recanalization of the vessels can be shown. Space occupying lesions and intraabdominal tumors can compress, displace and invade adjacent intraabdominal vessels. In ligamentum arcuatum syndrome the coeliac trunk is compressed by the ligamentum arcuatum causing recurrent abdominal pain, vomiting and weight loss. The compression of the coeliac trunk causes an increase of the systolic flow velocities over 2 m/s especially during inspiration. More... »
