ABSTRACT

Between 1987 and 1988, we found that vascular endothelial cells generate nitric oxide (NO) from the amino acid L-arginine. The formation of NO by this L-arginine: NO pathway was subsequently found to occur in many other cells and tissues, where NO acts as a transcellular signal. In recent years, interest in the physiological, pathological and therapeutic implications of this novel mediator has increased exponentially, revealing the diversity of biological roles played by this simple molecule both in the cardiovascular and in other systems (see [1–3]).
