ABSTRACT

For a long time prokaryotes were thought to be unable to synthesize polycyclic triterpenes. However, biomarkers possessing the triterpenic hopane (1) skeleton were found in the organic matter of all sediments and petroleums, independently of their age, nature and origin [1]. They are the most abundant natural products of defined structure on earth, their carbon representing more than all the carbon accumulated in the biosphere [2]. Hopanoids are present in a few scattered taxa of higher plants as well as in several cryptogames. However this rather rare occurrence in living higher organisms and the C30 skeleton of these eukaryotic hopanoids could not account for the ubiquity of the geohopanoids possessing extended side-chains with up to five additional carbon atoms. The wide distribution of these geolipids as well as the early identification of simple C30 hopanoids in a few prokaryotes led to the following hypothesis: these molecular fossils may originate from still unknown lipids of ubiquitous microorganisms,i.e. most probably from prokaryotes [3,4]. The rather fortuitous discovery of the C35 bacteriohopanetetrols in Acetobacter aceti ssp.xylinum in 1973 [5] was the first report of a new series of long undisclosed and completely overlooked prokaryotic membrane components and conforted the hypothesis of the prokaryotic origin of the geohopanoids.
