ABSTRACT

In opening the panel I want to stress that a discussion on the future must not be taken on the same footing as the other panels and discussions of the Conference. Looking into a crystal ball is not scientific! Nonetheless each one of us continuously projects the present knowledge into the future, tries to guess the possible lines of development and uses this non-objective input to guide his actions. The Organizing Committee considered that it would be of interest for the participants to this Conference to listen to a group of experimental physicists spelling out their opinions on the development of our field of research and of its basic instruments, the accelerators. Fortunately the two ICFA Workshops, held in 1978 in Fermilab and in 1979 not far from CERN, have produced material which can be used as a starting point for this discussion. More... »
