ABSTRACT

The structure of the two 3/2− states in 41 Ca at 1943 and 2463 keV has long been of interest.1,2 The simple shell model predicts just one 3/2− state, having the configuration P3/2 coupled to the 40Ca core. Both the 1943 and 2463 keV states are strongly populated in the 40 Ca(d,p)41Ca reaction however, indicating significant single particle configurations in each level. The γ-ray decay properties of these levels are very different though. The 1943 keV level decays to the 7/2− ground state with a strong BE2 transition of 65 e2fm4. The 2463 keV level has no observable ground state decay3 (BE2 < 0.06 e2fm4) but instead decays solely to the 1943 keV level via a low energy transition. More... »
