ABSTRACT

The Himalayan region is home to diverse ecological systems covering many important flora and fauna that are indispensable for human livelihood. Himalayan medicinal plants have great value in the traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Chinese traditional medicine, and Tibetan traditional medicine systems and other indigenous medicine systems. Due to extreme environmental conditions, climate change, and other anthropogenic factors, there is huge biodiversity loss, and various medicinal plants are endangered. Similarly, these environmental challenges also affect the content of bioactive chemical constituents in medicinal plants. This chapter summarizes some of these aspects of Himalayan medicinal plants and their conservation and environmental challenges with a focus on the bioactive chemical constituents. More... »
