ABSTRACT

Gabites (1950) carried out a comprehensive investigation of the energy balance of the whole earth, and the essential features of the global balance of angular momentum were established by Priestley (1951). Only recently have the atmospheric fluxes of various properties been calculated directly from aerological soundings in the Southern Hemisphere, although there have been many such computations in the Northern Hemisphere. In this synopsis, I shall make extensive use of these flux evaluations, along with available calculations of earth-atmosphere exchanges and other sources and sinks of momentum and energy within latitude belts, which give independent estimates of the meridional fluxes.
