ABSTRACT

The injury-induced proliferation of neural stem/progenitor cells appears to be an important attempt at self-repair by the damaged brain, especially during development. This mechanism has been demonstrated following neonatal hypoxia or hypoxia–ischaemia. In contrast, systemic inflammation seems to inhibit neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation. The impact of seizures and trauma on neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation is more complex and appears to be highly dependent on the stage of brain maturation. Even in cases where neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation is increased, the impaired migration, maturation, integration, and survival of these newly produced cells have been repeatedly reported, potentially limiting their beneficial effects on the outcome. However, new strategies based mainly on the use of exogenous trophic factors or exogenous stem cells have been recently developed to overcome these limitations. More... »

64 schema:description The injury-induced proliferation of neural stem/progenitor cells appears to be an important attempt at self-repair by the damaged brain, especially during development. This mechanism has been demonstrated following neonatal hypoxia or hypoxia–ischaemia. In contrast, systemic inflammation seems to inhibit neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation. The impact of seizures and trauma on neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation is more complex and appears to be highly dependent on the stage of brain maturation. Even in cases where neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation is increased, the impaired migration, maturation, integration, and survival of these newly produced cells have been repeatedly reported, potentially limiting their beneficial effects on the outcome. However, new strategies based mainly on the use of exogenous trophic factors or exogenous stem cells have been recently developed to overcome these limitations.
