ABSTRACT

In this paper we will review some of the work we have been doing on the dynamics of flow in granular materials. The work consists of two parts. The first section is devoted to a comparison1 of the avalanche dynamics in a pile of sand with the predictions of the models of “self-organized criticality” introduced by Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld2.
