ABSTRACT

Group A rotaviruses play an important role in the etiology of neonatal diarrhea in animals (Paul and Lyoo, 1993). Several recent advances helped in defining the roles of the outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7 in the protective immune response to rotavirus infection. In the binary system of classification of rotaviruses the types based on the VP7 protein are referred to as G types (Estes and Cohen, 1989). Rotaviruses belonging to G6 type are most commonly associated with rotaviral diarrhea in calves (Paul and Lyoo, 1993; Parwani et al., 1993). We have been investigating the extent of genetic diversity occurring in the VP7 gene among different field isolates of G6 type.
