ABSTRACT

“Noise eaters” are optical devices, now commercially available, which are able to reduce the intensity noise of any incoming laser beam. These devices are based on electronic servoloops driving intensity modulators, and it can be shown that they cannot reduce the noise below the standard quantum noise level, or shot noise. This talk will show that one is able to develop “Quantum noise eaters”, which are likely to reduce the noise of an incoming beam below the standard quantum noise limit, either on its intensity or on a chosen quadrature component. We will give three examples of such devices, based respectively on laser-cooled atoms, on parametric media, and on mirrors moving under the influence of the radiation pressure force. More... »
