ABSTRACTThe dispersive interaction of an atomic beam with a light wave may be used to perform non destructive measurements of the atomic intensity1. This process is analogous to the crossed Kerr effect used in quantum optics to perform QND measurements of light intensities2. In order to assess the quantum properties of such measurements, it is necessary to take into account the quantum fluctuations of the light beam. We show here that it also requires a quantum field description of atomic waves. More... »
