ABSTRACT

Ether lipids have several biological functions as important components of mammalian cells. Considerable interest has recently focussed on the “platelet activating factor” (PAF; 1-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine), which seems to be of pathogenic importance in the mediation of allergic and inflammatory reactions. A number of analogs of PAF whithout platelet aggregating activity are cytotoxic for a variety of cell types3. Racemic 1-octadecyl-2-methyl-glycero-3-phosphocholine (Et-18-0CH3; INN: Edelfosine) was the prototype in this class of new anti-cancer agents to undergo preclinical evaluation. More... »
