AUTHORS ABSTRACTThe situation that will be considered here is that of a coherent pulse propagating in a vapor mixture of two isotopes. An exact analysis of coherent two-step photoionization is presented for the case of lithium vapor, showing that the production rate of selected ions can be one hundred times larger with coherent picosecond excitation than with conventional pulses, while the optical energy consumed to extract a unit quantity of the selected isotope is smaller in the case of coherent picosecond excitation.
